2020 has begun devastatingly fast.
Iran-American Crisis, Australian Bushfire, earthquakes, flooding, volcano eruption, bloody protests in HongKong, new refugee crisis and finally COVID-19.
There is one thing in common with this crisis which is that all affect whole world somehow but COVID.19 affects more directly. Therefore we will talk about it in the rest of text.
I won’t give datas or facts because there are plenty of them and even not consistent. I will tell about my observation.
What does Corona tell us? Can we take some lessons?
First of all, it tells that we are wrong by thinking that everything is for people. A simple virus(relatively weak) can turn everything upside down. All system we have built can crash.
Viruses are quite all and they are using us to reproduction. They are fighting in our body, reproducing, living. Sometimes, I think that Viruses are more advanced civilization than us and we are just hosts in this earth that viruses use.
Therefore, the most important lesson is, we need to change. We should stop living as we will never die,. Everything should change. The system we create, our point of view, life styles, everything… Because any problem in any corner of the world is affecting whole humanity. So, 21.century will deal with much more problems and crisis because this is the milestone and first step of future civilization.
Our civilization had big problems with agricultural revolution, with religions, industrial revolution and now technology age. Technology has developed very fast but human mind not.
We say that refugee crisis is due to people who don’t fight and left their country but even you solve this problem much more migration will take place. At the best case, people will escape from hot weather, harsh environmental conditions, drought, famine and these are already happening. In near future, the most of the world will have problem with fresh water and water related diseases.
Naturally, we are having big conflict with 21.centuries modern life and 19-20.centuries political views. People still couldn’t advanced to 21. century. We need to give up old ideologies, perspectives, competitions, rivalries and hate. Instead, we should work for future. We should forget our ego, rage, fights and embrace whole world together. Everybody should demand this. Our differences, cultures are richness but we shouldn’t forget that we are all the citizen of earth and member of same civilization. In this purpose, there should be more agreements, more communication, global education systems, health system and global language because human being is not smart. The only way to beat differences is education so that to know each other and get used to live together.
Let’s back to Corona. Following points get my attention in this process.
- Mislead of Social Media
People are polarized due to incomplete data and information. The ones who don’t care about virus and not taking it serious; other paranoids who thinks it is fake, artificial or biological weapon; the one who misuse situation and doomsayers.
Due to social media, many people are not serious about the situation. They just can’t understand. This levity culture is more dangerous than virus because everywhere is with full of ignorants who don’t read, don’t understand what they read, who don’t search and who don’t listen experts. This feeds and grows this social mess. Many fake news are spreading everywhere and people think it as a game.
Just because they don’t know dozen of problems world is facing, they can defend theirselves horribly as ‘Only old people are dying’, ‘fatality rate is low’. It is easy to sacrifice other’s life!
2. Racism and Discrimination due to Corona
This happened at the first period of Virus. First of all, Western countries thought that virus would never come there and many negative news about China was served. Many videos, stories and china was told as a source of virus due to their culture, foods, habits. Many Chinese were excluded everywhere. All Chinese were seen as a source of virus and many hate speech took place. We are talking about billion of people, everything is possible as many weird things happens in every country, every culture.
When virus traveled everywhere, another problem popped up. People who were in Italy was excluded and they faced strong bias when they went back to their countries. Their friends, relatives, family stayed away from them and they were socially isolated although it is proven that they are not sick. Ironically, while all these happens, the ones who has bias and even hate to others, didn’t change daily habits and didn’t take any action to protect their selves.
All these biased people underestimate the numbers and they consider closing schools and other shut downs as holiday, continued daily life, filled cafes, bars, clubs, shopping centers, stadiums until governments ban everything. It is so funny to make people protect their self, governments had to announce every certain place as forbidden. Neither disasters nor wars kill people, ignorant does!
3. Failure in Crisis Management
Do we really panic that much? I think not. Although it is serious pandemic, it is also relative weak. We could take action without panic. I think whole world failed with crisis management. Officials, press, authorities, scientists created big panic in society. Even the protection actions are not consistent. Nobody understood the seriousness of situation and nobody really know what they are doing and what is expected. Everything is unclear.
Therefore, while education has paused, people are going to work. Many public places remained open and many people stuck in other countries and cannot go back to their own country.
Still noone knows where all these will go and how this chaos will be solved. Everybody is waiting for summer and expecting it will slow down. Meanwhile, some treatment can be developed or hospitals can be relieved. Otherwise, there is no way that any healthcare system can deal with this.
On the other hand, we don’t know how we will go back to business and recover the economy.
4. Stupidity of Human
There is not much to expect from human. We saw that without rigid rules and pressure, we are helpless to protect ourselves. It is same everywhere in the world. If there was more serious pandemic or disaster, no one would survive. I think, also in the history many people died because of this stupidity not due to wars or sickness. (of course, they had disadvantage that they had’t had technology, commucation)
Human being is so stupid that even in pandemic situation that whole world is affected, they can argue with each other about the reality of fact. They can argue over real or artificial, fake or exaggeration; they can relate with religion and believe that in mosques, churches, synagogue they will be safe; or they can say that old people are left to death or other stupid discussions.
Another stupidity is we have already forget that few decades ago, we weren’t this rich, we were dealing with massive problems, we didn’t have personal space, couldn’t reach everything we want, we weren’t even free. 50-60 years of life was big deal!
5. Looting and Selfish Nature of Human
It has been hundred, thousands years that we have started to live together with big groups that we call society, civilization, nation and so on. Despite this, it is surprising that we still live with our basic instincts. Everybody just wants to save theirselves which is not so weird. I can understand survival reflex but I cannot understand looting the markets. It doesn’t matter rich or poor; ignorant or educated everybody did the same. I thought about the possible reasons but couldn’t figure out. Perhaps, fear of death.
I think it is not fear of death but fear of losing. As i mentioned before, we forgot what we were. I am not talking about centuries. We already forgot 10-20 years back. All these are the result of the own values we created and result of over materialism. Now, no one wants to lose their status, standards, comfort. That’s why all they care is their selves. It is same for looters but also the ones who don’t care virus.
One of my friend said ‘I am not afraid of death. I don’t care corona and hate that everybody talks about it. I cannot understand why it is exaggarated’
This perspective is also the consequence of selfishness. The importance and seriousness of the fact is not fatality rate or fear. It is unclearity.
- We don’t know what will virus cause, how it will be evolved, how it will impact, what will happen in future
- We don’t know whether and when it will be cured
- We don’t know economical damage it causes, social and political outputs
- Even if there is vaccine, we don’t know how many people can reach it. Doctors will have to decide who will live and who should die. Sometimes, they will leave relative healthy patients to death and they have to carry this burden during their entire life
- We don’t know how much our healthcare systems can bear
In short, this is irresponsibility and selfishness. You may not want to live or like the life. You may be not afraid of death but you have responsibilities to other people who still have many things to enjoy, who wants to be alive, who have this desire and most importantly you are responsible to future generations.
As a result, world has to change and evolve to new big, galactic civilization. Otherwise, we will demolish ourselves.
