10 November 2016

Tomorrow is 10 November 2016. Many Turkish will post photos, quotes of Ataturk. This is the 78. Death anniversary of the founder of Turkish Republic, revolutionist, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. He is very important for us because he is the symbol of enlightenment, secularism and open-mindedness, or at least for me.

I always believe that thoughts, ideologies should be evolved rather than to be stuck.. Role Models should be a target to go further, not to be the same. Because all great historical figures made just the first step although their ideas influence next hundred years. As we don’t call Neil Armstrong for all space trips or as Einstein didn’t say “yes Newton was so damn right ,so no need for further researches”.. or as philosophers doesn’t say that “ok previous ones already thought , so no need to think about it anymore”; all ideas, ideologies, discoveries should be enhanced and people should try to go beyond, go further as much as possible by taking lessons from past.

Today in Turkey(well, since many years) people are very proud of history but they never think about it, unfortunately . They never question the truths they believe or things they hate. They prefer to be hidden behind the shadows. They are not interested in the fact , on the contrary, they are looking for someone to blame or someone to make untouchable figure or let’s say complete taboo.

Tomorrow many Turkish people will share the photos and quotes of Ataturk but no one thinks about the meaning behind. No one will give a single effort to thoroughly understand the idea behind. Neither supporters nor opponents. As Ataturk walked alone through the light, after 78 years of his death, he remains still alone on the way of enlightenment. Because after so many years , we are in complete darkness. We have stuck in his shadow as we do for all historical figures . We are behind his mind almost one century before and even not close. On the contrary, Turkey has improved complete ignorance in recent years and bad thing is people enjoy this ignorance.

Perhaps, as Plato says, democracy is not for ignorant people. There are so many historical proofs of that and US has proved it again yesterday. That’s why I would like to write this also in English. To remember, to share and to remind the importance of wisdom, open-mindedness and farsightedness. To show, how human mind, perspective remains primitive, how ignorance resists to time even if technology is improving like crazy, even if information is easily accessible, even if we can learn everything just in seconds. Because this is not only the fact of Turkey but also the fact of whole world.

Here is some quotes from Ataturk during the World War I, the war of Independence and after.. almost one century before… Let’s see where the humanity is today..

“The biggest battle is the war against ignorance”

“Our true mentor is science”

“Peace at home, Peace in the world”

“Unless a nation’s life faces peril, war is murder”

“Everything we see in the world is the creative work of women”

“Mankind is a single body and each nation is a part of that. We must never say “What does it matter to me if some part of the world is ailing” if there is such an illness, we must concern ourselves with it as though we were having that illness.”

“If someday my teachings conflict with science, choose the science”
